South Tyrol is very rightly proud of its tradition for making good wines and the region produces a fine selection of simple table wines as well as highly-prized, top-quality special wines which have recently been making a name for themselves on the world market. The most well-known Italian wine guide, the "Gambero Rosso", for example, mentions one fifth of a total five hundred wines from the region as being worthy of note and gives the best eighteen of them a three-glass sign, the highest award of its kind.
